Character Background
• History: Wiki Page
• Core Relationships:
- Team Sanzo -
Easily the three most important people in Goku’s life, all of whom he attributes to not just being his friends, but his family. Though the circumstances that brought them all together are not normal by any means, and if you asked any of them they’d insist they’re really only working together because they were told to, Sha Gojyo, Cho Hakkai, and Genjo Sanzo have been constants in Goku’s life for years. He implicitly trusts them with his life (and his sanity), and similarly has put himself at great risk for their sakes without a moment’s thought or hesitation. The group has been traveling together for so long now that Goku tends to feel off when they’re separated for too long. As the most genuinely friendly member of Team Sanzo, Goku tends to both carry the group’s morale and cause them the most trouble despite his best efforts to be helpful. He’s definitely the youngest child in this family, with Gojyo as his older brother and Hakkai being kind of like a mother.
- And As For Sanzo Himself -
To Goku, Sanzo is a lot of things. Not only is he his legal guardian, but he’s also his father, his brother, his idol, his sun, and his savior. Genjo Sanzo is the one who found Goku locked away in an earthen prison deep in Mount Gogyou, brought there because apparently Sanzo could hear Goku calling out to him for help. He then brought Goku down the mountain to a temple and gave him a home to stay in (much to the chagrin of the other monks who lived there). He’s stayed by Sanzo’s side ever since, fiercely protective and loyal almost to the point of being dependent on him most of the time. And though Sanzo would sooner die than admit it, Goku is an important fixture in his life as well. They’ve certainly both lost their cool in the face of watching the other nearly die in front of them, after all. The love Goku feels for Sanzo is deep and familial, and their bond goes way back into Sanzo’s past life - even though neither he or Goku remember it.
Character Personality Through Key Moments
(2+) Positive Experiences:
- Just A Big Kid -
Goku is a very simple creature. He functions on a very basic, child-like level in spite of his age, and this is largely due to the fact that he was locked away in a mountain cage for 500 years and has lost all memories of anything prior to that. Being so much like a child leaves him with an incredibly cheery disposition. He's easily the most genuinely friendly of the Sanzo group as a result of his child-like naïveté. He’s naïve to a fault and can easily come across to most people as incredibly stupid, but much of what he’s experienced with the group is all just new to him and has to be explained, which certainly feeds into both his stubbornness and his sense of curiosity. Otherwise he’s really kind of a big goofball, gravitating to playing street games with the local kids or playing silly pranks around the temple with Gojyo. It's pretty easy to make him smile or befriend him, and so he usually has the same positive effect on other people. He's one of the guys to go to for tension-cutting in most situations; though this could largely be due to the fact that he doesn't really know how to read the atmosphere and act accordingly. He’s ridiculously loyal to his little family, but he’s even quick to trust any newer friends that he makes, often believing that whatever feeling he has for them is mutual – even if it turns out that it’s not. The very notion of betraying that trust is something he can’t quite fathom, and is more painful to him than it is enraging.
- I Fight For Me -
Between his desire to help people and his cheery disposition, Goku is the most hero-like out of the whole Sanzo-group. Though he's become friends with many different youkai and people alike throughout the series, he will still fight someone he generally dislikes or has done some wrongdoing no matter how big or small. And although he has the stereotypical hero syndrome, he has stated that the only reason he is fighting for himself, for his right to live. He has also shown that he will fight anyone trying to get in his or his group's way. He likes fighting, oftentimes in the same way a child likes playing a game. Meeting strong opponents is exciting and challenging to him, and he actually tends to look forward to encounters with them. But, like a child, he really hates to lose. The feeling of getting pushed to his feet and forced to submit to his opponent is, to him, the worst feeling in the world. He refuses to stay down, and will surge back up to the top through whatever means possible, pulling his companions up with him.
(2+) Negative Experiences:
- Hero Complex -
Although Goku generally tries to be as helpful as possible, it doesn't always work out the way he hopes it will. Things often blow up in his face, or cause more problems for the group than create solutions. He's just not as good at being helpful as he'd like to be, and this shortcoming is a cause of deep shame for him. One of the only things that can truly mellow him out is when he's made - or if he at least thinks he made - someone he cares for deeply (read: Sanzo) very upset, or if one of his friends has been hurt, or if he has been defeated.
- 500 Years Alone... -
For reasons that Goku will probably never, ever know, he had been imprisoned in the mountains for about 500 years. To say that the years he spent there were the worst years of his life would be an absolute understatement. It was there that he learned to hate the cold and yearn for sunlight and companionship, and he had his first run-in with death at the hands of the harsh snows of winter, giving him a mild fear of snow. It's because of his time there that he has problems with being left behind or alone, and he gets anxious about
- ...Will Give You Such a Pain in the Tum-Tum -
Goku is always… ALWAYS hungry, and he has no qualms about telling people so at any given time (which usually earns him a hard smack over the head with a paper fan or the firing of a gun). The only time he's not hungry is in the moments immediately following a meal. This is seemingly a result of the 500 years he spent imprisoned in the mountains; his body is simply making up for the fact that it received no nourishment for such a long time with an incredibly speedy metabolism.
Deer Country Attributes
• Canon Powers:
Goku could be considered a youkai (demon), as he basically emits and uses much of the same energy as youkais do. But he's not just any old, run of the mill youkai; he's quite possibly one of the most powerful beings in the world. In actuality, he's neither youkai, human, or god, but something inbetween that surpasses them all in ability: the "Great Sage Equal to Heaven", the Seiten Taisei. But this immense power is only unleashed when his power limiter (the golden headband he wears) is removed or breaks. In this form, he becomes bloodthirsty and sadistic, fully enjoying inflicting pain on others; even going so far as beating his enemies when they can't fight back. He becomes able to move so fast that often others can't even see him and his strength increases so much that he's able to easily inflict near fatal wounds on powerful opponents with only a few blows. He also becomes able to take any number of hits of any strength, simply shrugging it off like nothing. Though if something actually does hurt him, he just uses the energy of the earth to heal himself. He's almost completely unstoppable this way, becoming an extremely dangerous creature that can only be subdued through some form of divine intervention, something near equivalent in power to it, or pure luck.
Even without becoming the Seiten Taisei, Goku is extremely powerful. His physical strength, speed, and stamina are all far higher than the toughest of non-human beings. What's more, he's a natural born fighter. He's never needed any training of any kind, as he instinctively knows how to read a fight, how to enter it, and more importantly how to end it. He doesn't really know the meaning of "holding back," and will make quick work of any opponent even if he doesn't mean to. In fact, he's such an impressive hand-to-hand fighter that he's even been able to beat up opponents in his sleep.
He also has the ability to summon a powerful magical staff called the Nyoi Bo. He can make it grow in length and also have it break apart into a sectioned staff or nunchaku, the segments connected by a chain. There are probably some practical everyday uses he could find for the thing, but generally he only uses it while fighting serious enemies.
• Blood Type: Coldblood
• Omen: a cartoony monkey
• Blessed Day: 10/9
• Patron Pthumerian: Cloverfield
• Blood Power Manifestation:
For the most part, Goku’s canon powers will probably be the dominant ones, so aside from his skin being cold to the touch there wouldn’t be much of a way to tell his blood type at first glance. He would likely chalk any changes in his sleep patterns up to just being One Of Those Things and think nothing more of it. Any actual elemental powers going off would be entirely by accident and definitely not anywhere in his control, and he’d have no idea what to do with it. On the other hand, if his limiter should come off and Seiten Taisei makes an appearance, he would definitely have a greater knack for his newfound elemental abilities.
